an associate wannabe$BlogItemTitle$>
tonite, im online for the sole purpose of blogging.
here's the life of an associate wannabe...
mon: go to the office in the morning, did some filing, nothing much at work. after work, go teach piano and meet enzie for a dinner in which we mourned over our miserable situations.
tues: tired from the nite before. serve me right for staying up till 1am to rush dat sia application. didnt do much at work, only some filing. then met enzie (again) for sakae sushi in which we mourned n just talk abt everything. n went to groom ourselves. u know, standard procedure for women. n a bit of shopping. shockingly, none of us bought anything. dats an achievement cuz normally, one of us would buy at least something. slept close to 1am.
wed: really busy with the EM file. in, out, return, sale. i think i went through at least 400+ pages of it!! then went home to rush sermon translation. dats about it. slept at 1am again.
thurs: finished the EM file. then i was given the EM pleadings to read. in the aftnn, went family court with JS!!! got to know this interesting custody case. oh man...family law is really interesting, gruelling and tough. but i find myself getting more into it as time goes by. did some research for dat case...n i wasnt even done with my research but had to go. came home, relaxed a bit then went to bed. it was around 12 i think. lots of late nights these days. too much things to do!
fri: the morning was INCREDIBLE. i cant believe it. this drew experience is really once in a lifetime. i really must thank willy for securing me this opportunity. i would say, this is the BEST day of my life, yet.
we went high court with BN. took a queue no. for chambers PTC (pre-trial conference), then BN showed us the bar room (where lawyers go to chill. there's free coffee n tea. the place is really posh. very decent n stylish. even though BN claims it to be just okie.) then we were showed the library which has i guess, the most extensive law collection in spore. BN explained that there are probably more case records in this library as compared to the one in nus which is stocked with more textbooks. then after dat, we went past chee soon juan's hearing in which he was sentenced 1 day jail, and a $6000 fine in default of 7 days jail. but from the news i heard on tv just now, he didnt pay the fine. he's bankrupt after all. so i guess he's gonna serve dat 7 days imprisonment. then we went to the indonesia maid, rohana's hearing in which she's charged for culpable homicide for causing the death of her employer. the facts of the case showed her to be in a fit of anger and fear when the accident took place. i cant imagine the deceased going through that kind of physical and mental torment. sarah n tim pities the maid, cuz she's only 21. i sympathize with her, in the sense that she probably didn't even know wat she was doing until everything was over. she was just scared after giving the deceased the first blow and wanted to escape from wat she did. n one thing lead to the other.
after dat, we went back to the chambers to see if its our turn to see the judge yet. n it was not!!! so we sat outside and saw the crowd of people including media buzzing over chee soon juan's case. there were even supporters of chee who wore purple shirts and a yellow ribbon like a necktie which had chinese characters on it which made up a kind of slogan dat meant, even the heavens cant dictate. then it was our turn to go into the chambers and man, we only took a hell 2 mins to do watever we want and we had to wait 2 hours for dat 2 mins. i shall retain my comment on efficiency of the court. after all, we were at high court!
after dat, we went up to the highest level, just below Court of Appeal (which is the highest level of court in spore). the spaceship level, dats wat we call it. it was completely glass. man, High Court building's architecture is just marvelous. u got to see it for yourself one day. n in there, not from the outside. n so we stood at the edge of the glass windows, n looked down. the view was spectacular..on the left it was the old supreme court tower, the parliament...then u see the spore river waterfront n the whole of raffles place with all the nice skyscrapers and to your right, well, better dun look cuz there's nothing much. i would say, u get the BEST of spore there. i dun think u can find anything in spore more beautiful than wat i saw today. the view was just superb. after marvelling at the incredible view, we went up to the Court of Appeal which is at the top of the entire building, simply becuz its the Court thats held in highest regard in legislation. this court only hears one week out of a month. the air-con, mics were all on. we walked into the area where prosecution n defense would take their place in court n i even tried the mics. dat place is seriouly high tec. n BN said the only good thing worth mentioning is the ceiling dat allows day light to shine into the court room. other than dat, there's nothing much abt the courtroom. not the grandeur dat u would expect. its actually a really simple courtroom, with very modern and high-tech furnishings.
after dat, we took a stroll back to the office, across spore river, by fullerton into raffles place. man, the morning was just memorable. it just makes me want to be in this position as a proper lawyer. like BN said, its a kind of lifestyle. n for me, its very desirable. not becuz of the glam, but becuz its a job where u work hard n u enjoy. (mind u, many lawyers stay up in the office till midnite. nothing superb abt dat)
my afternoon was piled up with work. EM's case again. i didnt even have time to help JS research on the custody case. but he was cool abt it. drew's envt is just really different. very pleasant, friendly n peaceful. not wat i got at minlaw. the politics n stuff. i really hope i can go back to drew n work even though the hours are crazy. its just too nice for me to say no!! (as if they want me) n i left at 6, way past my knock-off time. but i just felt really committed to my job. n i even feel like going in tmr to finish EM's case file. but i got to teach, so i cant. boohoo. im planning to go as early as i can on monday. for once, i wont be late. i cant wait to get back to the file. now u guys will understand why we need to stay up to such inhuman hours. becuz we really got work to do!!! i dun even mind the fact dat im not getting salary.
after dat, went city hall to get wei's present. on my way to mrt, deciding if i should go church for lent service or home, i called andy n realized dat he was also at city hall. so i met him, n obviously i ended up in church. dat marks the end of today.
i know the entry's incredibly long. dun read it if u dun have time.
this long entry is purely for documenting purposes so dat i'll never forget this wonderful experience.
i really wanna be a lawyer n go back to drew. may God help me. may it be His will, and not my will, but my willingness to submit to His plans for me.
gdnite.
