do you want to do well or do good?$BlogItemTitle$>
today i'm gonna recommend a book to everyone:
The Colour of Law by
Mark Gimenezit's a very addictive read. i combed through 465 pages in 2 days...dat's how good this book is! American newspaper/magazine
Time Out's review says "A compulsive read that owes its heart, soul and passion to Harper Lee's
To Kill a Mockingbird...Warning: you can lose an entire lazy Sunday to this one." And they were right. On top of studying for the horrifying finance test on sat, i was absorbed in this book for the last 2 days. i would study one chapter of finance (sometimes, half) and then reward myself with 1 or 2 chapters. i stayed up till 4am to finish this book on thurs nite. it is sooooooo good!
it doesn't just have a good storyline with a captivating main character. this book has real meaning and can impact your life. one of the most striking moments throughout my read was the line: do you want to do well or do good? how much would u sacrifice for the good of others, even those despised?
most people just want to do well: get the money, status, fame and a comfortable life. but so often we do not associate ourselves with wanting to do good. the desire to benefit others through our actions just contradicts our nature to put self before others.
most of the time, we intend to do good or don't even think about doing good. in the end we just turn to doing well instead. we care more about glory for ourselves more than the initial purpose of doing good. (think: rag and flag) it infuriates me when people use the reason, more like excuse, that they do not benefit from their acts of charity and kindness. beneath, what they honestly wanted is the glory and honour for themselves and would resort to all means just to get there.
so, are we doing good? or just merely doing better? doing well?
go read: The Colour of Law by Mark Gimenez.
u won't regret it.
